  • DISCLAIMER

To fully benefit from the NDC possibilities in merchandizing and customer personalization, Air France KLM will continue to develop its products after the launch of the first NDC API’s. This document therefore will be updated regularly.

Please note that Air France KLM is not liable for any losses arising from the participation in this trial or for any errors in this document.

  • INTRODUCTION

    • What is NDC?

The travel industry is a dynamic environment subject to constant change. Competition, digitalization and new customer expectations reinforce the need to adapt processes and technology. NDC is an xml based data exchange format designed to modernize the way air products are retailed to travel agents, corporations and travelers. This modern technology will allow the transmission of richer information, eventually improving the service offer to customers.

    • Why is AFKL developing NDC connection?

      The vision is twofold:

      • To set the basis : In publishing Air France KLM offer on NDC API’s, available for partners to sell (travel agencies, SBT’s, content aggregators, GDS).
      • To innovate: By taking advantage of NDC capabilities as a standard to develop a new offer.

NDC will be a powerful medium for Air France KLM to progressively improve customers experience in the future. As an enriched data transmission standard, NDC will enhance communications between airlines and travel agencies. It will allow the distribution of rich content and differentiated offers, ease the sale of ancillary products at travel agencies’ and create the base for a consistent response to customers’ needs on all channels and touchpoints.

    • What is the current scope?

As an NDC level 3 solution, current AFKL NDC APIs cover the “end to end” airline distribution cycle for flights and ancillaries in the indirect channel: i.e. shopping, booking, payment and ticketing, BSP reporting and servicing for IATA travel agencies.

The following APIs will be available per January 2018, in IATA NDC standard 17.1:

      • AirShopping
      • OrderCreate
      • AirDocIssue
      • OrderRetrieve
      • OrderList
      • FlightPrice
      • ItineraryReshop
      • OrderChange
      • OrderCancel
      • ServiceList
      • SeatAvailability

During Q1 2018, two new APIs will be delivered in order to manage sales of ancillaries:

      • ServiceList
      • SeatAvailability

      First available flight scope includes:

      • AF and KL marketing flights (whatever operating airline including HOP! and Joon)
      • One way and return trips
      • Public and corporate fares
      • Payment by CC and BSP settlement
      • Cancel, refund and change

The functional scope will be further developed in 2018.

    • When and how will it be available for developers?

The first functionalities as mentioned above will become available as of January 2018.

There are three ways to connect for booking and selling AFKL content using NDC:

      1. AFKL Agent Booking Tool: The Agent booking tool is a booking portal for travel agencies and will be accessible online via Agentconnect.biz. It will be progressively rolled out per point of sale, starting in April 2018.
      2. Connect to AFKL NDC APIs using an intermediary: Travel agents can choose to use an IT provider as an intermediary to access AFKL content exempted from Distribution Surcharge from their NDC APIs. This will be possible starting in January 2018, when AFKL NDC APIs will be first released.
      3. Direct Connect to AFKL NDC APIs: Travel agents can also set up a direct link to AFKL NDC APIs and source content exempted from Distribution Surcharge without third party intermediation.

Only IATA agencies can choose from the above three options.

If you are interested in connecting through one of these options, please continue to the ‘getting started’ section.

  • FAQs

      General

How many airlines are developing NDC capabilities?

NDC is an industry standard developed for the global air market. By end of 2017, 45 airlines will be NDC certified by IATA. More than 70 airlines, not yet certified, have confirmed plans to adopt NDC.

Do travel agencies have to become NDC capable in order to further access Air France KLM offer?

Air France KLM continues to distribute its offer through the GDS. However, connecting to Air France KLM APIs (or using the Agent Booking Tool) will allow to access new products and rich media content, to reduce offer and services gap with airline direct sales and to be exempted from Distribution Surcharge.

When will Air France KLM be NDC certified?

Air France KLM participates in IATA NDC certification process and aims for “level 3” certification by end of 2017.

Which NDC supported products can be expected in 2018?

Air France KLM’s vision is to develop bundled products and services for all customer segments and contexts. It will start by creating product and service bundles for our corporate customer segment, for example bundles that combine flights and flight related products (such as lounge access, Wifi on board, Fast Track) and/or partner products (such as taxi, shuttles or assistance services). Such products will be distributed progressively beginning the second half of 2018.

      What is “rich content”?

Rich content (also called “rich media”) covers a broad range of media content: it starts with pictures and videos but can also include information such as the version of business cabin on a specific flight / date or customer ratings. Rich content is meant to enrich Air France KLM product description in online interfaces or on travel agencies’ desktops. As a consequence, rich content will progressively strengthen Air France KLM’s ability to differentiate from other airlines and support the conversion from a simple search to an actual sale.

      What do we call personalization?

Air France KLM aims to be a leader in customer intimacy. Customer intimacy means personalization thanks to innovative technologies including NDC. Personalization consists of tailoring a service or a product to accommodate specific segment groups and/or individuals.

How will Air France KLM use NDC to personalize products in the future?

In the NDC process, the customer shopping request comes directly to the airline making it possible for the airline to tailor make its offer to the individual customer. In this way Air France KLM can personalize the offer to the customer. As an example, Air France KLM could create personalized offers taking into account:

      • Flying Blue status
      • Service and/or product preference
      • Booking and/or service history
      • Context information (such as destination, travel period, duration of stay and more)

      • Which forms of payment will AFKL NDC APIs and AFKL Agent Booking tool support?

AFKL NDC APIs and Agent Booking Tool manage both BSP cash payment and Credit Card payment on AFKL’s merchant of records. Instant payment and “pay later” (before Ticketing Time Limit) capabilities are also available.

      Corporate

What are the options for a Self Booking Tool (SBT) to access Air France KLM offer exempted from surcharge?

Most SBT already use multiple sources of content other than the GDS, such as API connections, either through an intermediary or by direct connect: in the case of Air France KLM, both are possible. SBT can technically combine content from different sources and display it in a seamless manner on their online interfaces.

What are the options for a corporate account to access Air France KLM offer exempted from surcharge?

A corporate customer has basically two options to access its Air France or KLM corporate offer exempted from Distribution Surcharge: Use the services of a Travel Management Company (TMC) that is consuming Air France KLM NDC APIS through one of the three above mentioned options: Agent Booking Tool; Connection through an intermediary; Direct Connection. Use a SBT accessing Air France KLM NDC APIS (see above question on SBT)

Use an intermediary to connect to Air France KLM NDC APISs

What are the benefits of using an intermediary?

The main benefit of using an intermediary is speed to market: travel agents can benefit from third-party provider interfaces that are already connected to Air France KLM NDC APIS as well as to other suppliers’. Such intermediaries offering aggregated content from multiple sources are called “aggregators”. They allow for accelerated technical connection. From travel agency perspective, it may also require less time and investment to get started, depending on technical conditions and specific design.

Is there a cost related to the service of an intermediary?

There is a wide variety of intermediaries in the market that offer a different suite of products with different related costs. These costs may also depend on how the chosen solution is designed and set up in individual cases.

Who are the main NDC aggregators?

The IATA “NDC Registry” lists some of the main NDC certified aggregators and IT solution providers that can support travel agencies in accessing supplier NDC APIs. It can be found under following address: http://www.iata.org/whatwedo/airline-distribution/ndc/Pages/registry.aspx

What is Air France KLM approach towards NDC aggregators?

Air France KLM fully acknowledges the need for aggregation in the travel market place. Air France KLM is working actively with several aggregators to integrate and consume our NDC APIs. The goal is to create more options for travel agencies to access Air France KLM NDC APIs before and after April 2018.

Can non IATA agencies connect to Air France KLM NDC APIs via an aggregator?

Only IATA agencies can connect to Air France KLM NDC APIs via an aggregator.

Direct connect to Air France KLM NDC APIs

Is there a cost related to a direct connect implementation?

The connection to Air France KLM NDC APIs is free of charge for travel agencies. However, setting up a direct connect to the APIs will require IT investment on agent side. These may vary based on agents’ individual situations. Depending on their existing technical set up, the integration of external APIs may require different level of resources. Air France KLM NDC services are open to all interested parties, subject to technical and commercial criteria.

What are the benefits of connecting directly to Air France KLM NDC APIs?

The major benefit of Direct connect is flexibility. Direct connection allows travel agents to integrate supplier’s API content to best meet their individual needs and set up, without depending on a intermediary’s technical and commercial specifics.
